    (PEQ Visual Performing Arts) In this course introductory arts course students will consider the intersections between visual art, personal narrative, and active citizenship as they work to understand issues of diversity and inclusion, including privilege, bias, and micro-aggressions. Students will describe, discuss, and analyze works of art with a social message, visual interventions and activism that promote social justice, diversity, and inclusion.   • ART.Q 120 - Photography as Activism: Using Photography for Social Reform


    (PEQ Visual Performing Arts) What role do creative arts play with respect to social reform? What constitutes truth when using creative expression to bring about societal change? This course is a study of photographic images (oftentimes accompanied by text) that were produced primarily for the purpose of improving the human condition.     In this culminating experience, students will examine current issues and trends, and acquire an orientation to on-going professional development.     This course is an introduction to current theory and research regarding language acquisition and literacy teaching and learning, Birth through Grade 12. Speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing, and dramatizing will be studied as interrelated processes, developing in the overlapping contexts of home, school, and community. Students will focus on effective language and literacy teaching and learning for all students, including children with disabilities and culturally and/or linguistically diverse.     This course is a continued exploration of typographic form and aesthetics with additional study of the intention, reason, and function of type. Students will refine their typographic design skills through pragmatic application and industry-specific projects. Discussions will include historical and contemporary influences. Exposure to successful work by influential designers will encourage learning through inspiration. Further course emphasis is on verbal presentation skills, critique, self-documentation, and process evaluation. Kineti type using time-based media will be explored at an introductory level.     Students will explore the role a visual designer plays in creating digital user experiences. An industry standard process will be followed to produce an original multiscreen app prototype. Students will conduct research and engage in ideation and rapid prototyping through the creation of site maps, wireframes, paper mocks, and user feedback sessions.   • AVCD 360 - Senior Portfolio and Presentation


    This is a senior level course aimed at assisting the student in developing and presenting their professional design portfolio for career expectations or graduate school. Working individually with the instructor, students will receive guidance in refining existing design pieces or creating new visual solutions, including a senior project. Students will organize and compile a professional portfolio that best represents their personal style, conceptual abilities, and technical competencies. Both a physical and a virtual version of the professional portfolio is produced. Further course emphasis is on verbal presentation skills and vocabulary necessary to articulate visual communication design concepts, and the ability to connect those concepts to pragmatic and professional contexts and for public interaction.     This is a senior level capstone course for VCD majors that will examine a range of contemporary issues, themes, and debates that effect designers today. Topics will be examined through reading, writing, lectures, discussions, and presentations. Issues discussed include social media and participatory culture; entrepreneurship and innovation; sustainability and usability; business contexts; ethical and legal issues; design trends; cultural perceptions; social activist design; the future of graphic design; design inquiry and process; and others.
