Coordinator: Sharon R. Murphy, Ph.D., Professor of Political Science

The International Studies major is an interdisciplinary program which is designed to educate students in the theoretical, substantive and ethical dimensions of both the methods through which nations interact and the problems that affect the world as a single unit. It also seeks to develop in each student a recognition and understanding of cultures outside the United States.

Basic Courses

Ins 201 (Introduction to International Studies) and Ins 400 (Senior Seminar) are designed to provide a coherent framework for the major; Ant 101* (Introduction to Social and Cultural Anthropology) provides an introduction to the study of humans in the context of their cultures; Geo 101* (Introduction to Geography), Psc 310* (Politics of the Developing World) or Eco 351* (Economics of Development); Psc. 314* (International Relations) and Eco 349* (International Economics), are all designed to provide an understanding of the structural constraints posed by the prevailing international political and economic systems.

International Studies Electives (9 hours)

This module is designed to add depth and balance for the emphasis on the social sciences in the Basic Courses. With advisement, students select courses which have a substantial focus on the world outside the United States from disciplines such as history, literature, fine arts, religious studies, natural sciences.

Foreign Language (12 credits)

Since a people’s culture and way of thinking are inherent in the language, it is essential for the student to develop at least an intermediate proficiency in the language.

6 cr. Lang 201-202 Advanced Conversation and Composition*
6 cr. Lang 203-204 Culture and Civilization* (or the equivalent)

One semester of study outside of the United States is strongly recommended.
