Students wanting an officially designated Pre-Dental concentration should complete the “Major Advisor Form” available in the Academic Advisement office. Most dental schools require a strong undergraduate background in the sciences as well as substantial clinical experience. Students wishing to apply to dental school must do so through the American Association of Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS) and take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT), typically no later than the October before the year the student intends to matriculate in dental school. The AADSAS reports that the average undergraduate GPA of enrollees in U.S. dental schools in 1998 was 3.33; the average DAT score of this class was 18.2. The Nazareth College Pre-Dental Medicine Program was structured using a compilation of requirements listed by dental schools at the following institutions: SUNY Stony-brook, SUNY Buffalo, University of Pennsylvania, and Case Western Reserve University. In addition to academic excellence at the undergraduate institutions, many dental schools use additional criteria such as community service, extracurricular activities, pre-dental experience, and research, to evaluate potential candidates.
