The Education Department offers undergraduate teacher preparation programs in the New York State teacher certification areas of: elementary, middle and high school levels. At the elementary/middle school levels, the Inclusive Education program is offered (Initial Quad Certification): Childhood Education and Childhood with Disabilities (Grades 1-6); Middle Childhood and Middle Childhood with Disabilities (Grades 5-9). Initial certification in Adolescence Education is available in the following academic subjects: Biology, Chemistry, English, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, and Social Studies (Grades 7-12). In addition, initial certifications are available in the following areas: Business and Marketing (Grades K-12) Speech-Language Disabilities (Birth-12) (offered through the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders); Art Education (Birth-12), and Music Education (Birth-12)

Qualified sophomores and juniors choosing to prepare for a teaching career may be admitted to the Education Department when they are recommended by the department chairperson of their academic major and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 and satisfy the interview requirements of the major department and of the Education Department.

All candidates for initial certification must satisfy the health education, child abuse, and violence prevention workshop requirement mandated by the New York State Education Law. Students may meet this requirement by taking the Edu 475 Workshop, offered by the Education Department and described below.

Students who have completed all requirements for the baccalaureate degree, who have demonstrated competence at 2.0 or above in each required course of their certification programs, who have satisfactorily demonstrated competence to teach during student teaching, and who have successfully completed the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations: Liberal Arts and Science Test (LAST), the Written Assessment of Teaching Skills (ATS-W) and the appropriate Content Specialty Test (CST) will be eligible for initial certification.

Required Courses in all Education Certification Programs

Edu 204. History and Philosophy of Education

A study of the historical and philosophical influences on education. Topics include Social Class and Educational Equity, Learner-Centered Education, and the Experiential Continuum. 30-hour field component required. 3 credits, 3 hours

Edu 475. Health Education, Child Abuse, and Violence Prevention Workshop

The New York State Education Law requires that all candidates applying for a first-time initial teacher certification satisfy the health education and the violence prevention requirements. Also it is required that this workshop include information regarding the physical and behavioral indicators of child abuse and maltreatment as well as the statutory requirements set out in the New York State Social Services Law. A criterion for successful completion of this workshop is attendance at all sessions and completion of written course assignments. This workshop is offered each semester and must be completed before the professional semester begins. 0 credits
