Major Program Requirements

B.S. in Chemistry – ACS Certified Degree
This program follows the curriculum established by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society. Within the context of a liberal arts background, students are prepared in chemistry for graduate study or for immediate employment in industrial positions. Along with the Chemistry major, students may select a minor in such fields as writing (helpful for a career in scientific writing), computer science or business/management to enhance opportunities in the business world. The major may be combined with initial certification in adolescence education for a career in teaching.

Prerequisites
Chm 145, 146L, 147 and 148L
Phy 251, 252, 203L and 204L
Mth 113, 114 and 213

Required
Majors are required to complete Chm 225, 226L, 251, 252, 253L, 254L, 361, 362, 363L, 364L, 365, 366L, 421, 421L, 445, 446L, 450, 451, 452W, and three additional credit hours of advanced chemistry work (at least two credit hours of which is laboratory work)

Recommended
Chm 422, 422L, 447, 461 or 462; Mth 302 and 304; Cis 142 and 143

B.S. in Biochemistry
This program is designed for students interested in a strong chemistry background but with specific emphasis to biological systems at the molecular level. The goal of this program is to prepare students for a career in medicine, dentistry and other health professions; graduate studies in biochemistry and other medical science areas; or immediate employment in industrial laboratories requiring expertise in biotechnology techniques.

Prerequisites
Same as B.S. in Chemistry

Required
Majors are required to complete Chm 225, 226L, 251, 252, 253L, 254L, 361, 362, 363L, 364L, 365, 366L, 421, 421L, 422, 422L, 450, 451, and 452W; Bio 103, 103L, 310, 310L, 410 and 410L. To receive ACS Certified Degree students must also take Chm 445, 446L and 3 credits of advanced elective.

Recommended
Chm 425, 447, 461 and 462; Bio 317 and 317L, 325, 425 and 452; Mth 302 and 304; Cis 142 and143

Senior Experience
For Chemistry majors, the Chemistry Seminar (Chm 450-452W) functions as the Senior Experience. The seminar develops
the scientific reasoning and communications skills and evokes the integration of the liberal studies into the major. Students prepare and present research papers based on laboratory research or extensive reading of research literature.
