Programs of Department
Within the department there are two major programs, one in History and one in Political Science. The department also coordinates the Pre-Law program and the American Studies program and the International Studies program and the Geography courses.

A Major Program in History

All History majors are required to take six credits from His 101, 102, 103, and six credits in His 205 and 206. In addition, they are normally required to take eight courses beyond the introductory level, including His 381 and 481. Some upper division Political Science courses may be substituted with the approval of the department chairperson.

Majors in the adolescence initial certification program must elect six credits in History other than European or American, three credits in geography, and six credits in economics, and six credits in political science. In most instances 100- or 200-level courses will satisfy these social science requirements. Students must also take Lst 301 (Language and Literacy Development).

For the Senior Experience, History majors complete His 481 (History and Historians). In addition, they are required to complete a comprehensive examination which has a written and oral component. In both the written and oral parts of this examination, the students are required to give evidence of the integration of their major with areas of the Liberal Studies core -philosophy, art, religion, literature as examples.

A Major Program in Political Science

Required
Psc 201, 352, 440 and 21 additional upper-division hours in Political Science including one course in each of the four subfields of the discipline (political philosophy, United States politics, comparative politics, international politics.), Psc 499 and Mth 207.

The Political Science Senior Experience consists of the Senior Seminar (Psc 440) and a comprehensive examination with both written and oral components. Students must give evidence of integrating their major with areas of Liberal Studies core - philosophy, economics, religion, literature - as examples.

Political Science Minor

Students wishing to minor in Political Science take Psc 201 and 15 credits of upper division Political Science courses.

Pre-Law Program

The History/Political Science Department is responsible for advising students who are interested in pursuing careers in law, either as lawyers or as paralegal assistants. There is no formally recognized Pre-Law major as such. The American Bar Association recommends that interested persons should major in a discipline in which they can excel and find satisfaction. It also recommends that, regardless of the major chosen, a student should select courses that emphasize the skills of verbal and written comprehension and expression, a critical understanding of human institutions and the values with which the law deals and the creative power of thinking. To enhance the mastery of these skills and insights, the department sponsors a program that includes courses in logic, rhetoric, law, history and political science. Interested students should contact the Pre-Law advisor to develop an appropriate course of study for their four years of college.

Pre-Law Minor

Students wanting an officially designated Pre-Law Minor take 7 required courses:
Eng 251 and 252; His 205 or 206; His/Psc 308; Mgt 305; Phl 101; Psc 201; and three of these: Eco 101; His/Psc 304; Mgt 306; Phl 201; Psc 418; Psc 419; Psc 483; Soc 409; Spt 374; Mgt 302. (Total: 10 courses- 30 credits) Pre-law students are urged to join the Pre-Law Association, a student organization which sponsors activities to help prepare students for law school.
