Music Education - Major (Bachelor of Music)

Music education majors at Nazareth University qualify for P-12 certification in music from the New York State Department of Education. As a state certification requirement, students complete professional courses in instrumental, choral, and general music methods. The student teaching experience serves as the capstone for this program. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for student teacher placement. To earn teacher certification, students must complete all music education courses (as defined in the department handbook) with a grade of C or higher, and must pass the New York State teacher certification exams. The Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education requires the following minimum credits for degree completion:

  • Choral emphasis - 122.5 credits
  • Instrumental Band emphasis - 123 credits
  • Instrumental String emphasis - 124.5 credits

Requirements for New York Initial Teacher Certification
All teacher candidates must successfully complete the following to meet the requirements for New York teacher certification:

  • Academic and education program with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • All education course work with a grade of C or higher
  • New York State teacher certification examinations 

All students in a first time certification program requiring student teaching must successfully complete the following requirements to obtain New York State Teacher Certification:

  1. Educating All Students Test (EAS)
  2. Content Specialty Test(s) (CST)
  3. NSTAR Assessment

Teacher candidates use the NYS TEACH system to apply for Initial certification(s) and need to pay the fees in effect at the time they apply. New York requires all teacher candidates to have fingerprint/background check on file with TEACH and pass all appropriate New York State Teacher Certification Examinations www.nystce.nesinc.com. New York State Education Department maintains a website with certification requirements: http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Through advocacy, demonstrate a commitment to the tenets of the music education profession.
  2. Demonstrate effort and competence as an artist-musician, pedagogue, scholar, and emerging professional.
  3. Through the completion of the methods course sequence and the professional semester, cultivate and reflect upon one’s own understanding of effective teaching strategies for the music classroom. Show consistent development as an emerging professional, planner, facilitator, evaluator and music specialist.
  4. Apply knowledge from Core courses, music courses, applied lessons, and ensemble experiences to effective music teaching and learning environments for all learners.
  5. Exercise flexibility, a willingness to learn, and a consistent positive attitude toward music education.
  6. Writing and Discussion - the ability to incorporate both state and national standards into successful, developmentally appropriate music teaching for all learners.

Core Curriculum Requirements


All Nazareth students complete Core Curriculum coursework as part of their degree requirements. The Core provides a foundation in the liberal arts and sciences while guiding students to pose and explore their own intellectual questions. Bachelor of Music Core


All students in the School of Music must take:

  • MUX 019 - Concert Attendance Credits: 0 (4 semesters)
  • MUX 099 - Music Department Orientation Credits: 0
  • MUP 1_ - Weekly, one hour private lessons (8 semesters)
  • ENS 0_ - Major Ensemble Credits Available: 0, .5, or 1 (8 semesters; 7 semesters Instrumental in Music Education)
  • MUX 49_ Senior Recital Credits: 0

In addition to the requirements listed above, all Music Education students take the following courses:

Note: All instrumental music education majors (band or strings tracks) are required to take MUP 2A - Performance Secondary Voice or ENS___ - Choral Ensemble in their second semester. 

Foreign Language Requirement


  • Students must complete a Modern Foreign Language course (3 or 4 credits).

Upper Division Music Electives


Elective Requirements by Program

  • Bachelor of Arts in Music - complete one upper division music elective from either Music Theory or Music History
  • Bachelor of Music in Composition - complete three upper division music electives
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Education - complete one upper division music elective from either Music Theory or Music History
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy - complete one upper division music elective (three credits)
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Performance (Voice) - complete one upper division music electives in Music Theory and one upper division elective in Music History
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Performance (Piano, Instrumental) - complete four upper division music electives; at least one must be in Music Theory and one must be in Music History

Music Senior Experience


The culminating senior course for the BM in Music Education is the Senior Recital, an experiential learning course engaging students in demonstrating the practical application of knowledge and skills acquired in the study of applied music, music history, music theory and the liberal arts.
