English - Major

English majors encounter literature, rhetoric, and culture through the study of both traditional and cutting-edge genres, including short stories, poems, films, podcasts, graphic novels, and zines. Core courses in British, American, and global literature provide broad knowledge of the literary tradition, in addition to skill in literary and cultural analysis and criticism. Electives allow for in-depth study of literature in diverse cultural contexts, and offer opportunities to develop rhetorical and creative writing skills.

Students who pursue teacher certification through the English education program receive special instruction in teaching methods and philosophy through the English department (in addition to their required coursework in the School of Education). To be eligible for the Professional Semester (student teaching), students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.7.

English majors seeking teaching certification have the freedom to declare a second major or a minor that complements their studies in English.

*Note: Only four courses (12 credit hours) will be accepted as transfer credit toward the English major.

Core Curriculum Requirements

All Nazareth students complete Core Curriculum coursework as part of their degree requirements. The Core provides a foundation in the liberal arts and sciences while guiding students to pose and explore their own intellectual questions. See Academic Policies and Procedures  for specific core curriculum requirements.

English Core

All English majors are required to take an English literature Perspectives-Enduring Questions (PEQ) course, Introduction to Literary Studies, three “Studies” courses in the areas of British, American, and global Literature (one course in each of the three areas), an internship or professionalization course, and the Senior Seminar.

English Elective Courses

In addition to the English Core requirements:

English Majors and English Majors with Inclusive Early Childhood/Childhood Education

  • Select five electives at the upper-level (primarily 300-400 courses, though ENGW 250  and ENGL 239  are also accepted to meet this 15 credit requirement).

English Majors with Adolescence Education

  • Select four electives from the list below (primarily 300-400 courses, though ENGW 250  and ENGL 239  are also accepted to meet this 12 credit requirement).

English Senior Experience

The Senior Seminar in English is the culminating experience of the major, and it is required for graduation.  The seminar is intended to enable students to demonstrate mastery of their major field.  All Senior Seminar projects will involve a significant research component and a public presentation of that research; beyond that, projects will vary according to student interest and the focus of the English Senior Seminar, to which the Senior Experience is attached.
