LST 512 - Milton and Nietzsche: Prophets of Difference This course will make a contrastive study of two
giants of Western culture: John Milton, the
seventeenth-century poet who writes to “justify
the ways of God to men”; and Friedrich Nietzsche,
the nineteenth-century post-Romantic philosopher
who claims that “God is dead”, and then proceeds
to explore the profound implications of that
conclusion. Despite many profound differences,
these two figures nevertheless bear uncanny
resemblance to one another in their personal
and intellectual lives as they seek to express
views of human existence which are at once tragic
and transcendent.
