Chinese - Major

The B.A. in Chinese provides students with the linguistic proficiency, as well as the knowledge of Chinese literature, culture, and history required for Chinese-related careers, which range from business to education and diplomacy. It offers students the opportunity to deepen their understanding not only of Chinese culture, but also that of the entire human civilization. It educates students to think independently, critically, and rationally, and to perceive the world from a global and multicultural perspective.

The objectives of the program are achieved through the integration of multiple means including an interdisciplinary curriculum, lab work, a study abroad program, and activities served by the Chinese Cultural Center and the Chinese Club. The curriculum is composed of language courses at all levels, combined with upper-level courses in Chinese literature, culture, and history taught either in English or Chinese (or in both languages). The training at our multi-media Emerson Foreign Language Laboratory helps students consolidate and reinforce their communication ability. The study abroad program provides students the opportunity to immerse themselves in Chinese culture as well as to sharpen their language skills with highly concentrated training. The activities served by the Chinese Cultural Center and the Chinese Club lend students the channels to effectively interact with the local and international Chinese communities.

Students are encouraged to pursue the Chinese major or minor in tandem with a second major or minor. The content and structure of the program are designed to provide the maximum flexibility and compatibility for a double-major or a combination of the Chinese major with other academic disciplines.
