Mathematicians and data scientists discover and describe patterns, create and utilize structures, discern and transform relationships, identify and optimize connections, reason logically and solve complex problems. Companies hire our majors to think creatively and comprehensively, manage resources, organize information, assess options, investigate risk and clearly communicate technical information in insurance, information, industrial, financial and other fields.
Our faculty invite students to engage in undergraduate research, to gain experience through internships, and to present their work at national conferences. Our courses feature inquiry-based learning and integrate the use of software to explore and understand concepts. Our students develop essential written and oral communication skills, and immerse themselves in critical thinking as they analyze and solve problems. Many of our majors complete a second major or a minor in another area of interest. Students are prepared for graduate study, although most choose to immediately begin their careers upon graduation.
