SOC 314 - Marriages and Families How much of who we fall in love with is really our own choice? Does capitalism shape what we consider romantic? Do 50% of all marriages really end in divorce? Do husbands do more or less housework than boyfriends? These are the types of questions addressed in class through a sociological analysis of marriages, families and other intimate relationships. Emphasis is on the social structures and trends that shape the meaning and experience of intimacy. Topics include myths of the American family; historical and cross-cultural variation in the quality and structure of family life; the impact of structured inequalities (e.g. social class) on intimate relationships; love and the partner selection process; violence and intimacy; divorce and remarriage; changing family and workplace roles.
