HIS 542 - Civil War and Reconstruction


An examination of the causes, evolution and aftermath of the Civil War with an emphasis on the major figures and reform currents of the era. Topics include Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, slavery, African American history, fugitive slave act, resistance, the underground railroad, constitutionalism, political power, U.S. military, political parties, partisanship, regionalism, Confederate states of America, war, politics, power, class, gender, race and racism. 10 hours fieldwork required.
