SOC 311 - Sociology of Work

Who decided that we have to work 40 hours a week? Do jobs reflect our true selves or are they just a way to earn money? In what ways do automation, AI, and digital platforms transform our perceptions of job security, career progression, and work-life balance? This course delves into how technological advancements have reshaped today’s job market, contrasting it with the experiences of previous generations. It explores the cultural experiences of work both in the United States and globally, with a keen focus on 21st-century labor trends, digital employment, and the gig economy. We’ll investigate the intricate relationship between work, technological change, and social inequality, examining how digital platforms and automation are transforming traditional models of employment and what this would mean for the future of work. Whether you know what you want to do after Naz or not, this course will expose you to a wide range of perspectives on why and how we work. Course Codes: BR.
