SPN 314 - Migrants’ Voices

(DEIB) The course explores the experiences of migrant workers from Latin America who cross the border into the U.S., as well as the crucial relationship of the U.S. and Mexico through theoretical essays, literary writings, urban chronicles, podcasts, vloggs, newspapers online, films, music, political caricatures, blogs, and Internet sites produced by Mexican and Mexican-American (Chicano) authors about their experiences. May include a hands-on service project with the migrant workers community in the area. Despite the at times heated debates in the U.S. to keep off our southernmost neighbors, Mexico remains as one of the most important commercial partners of the U.S.; furthermore, a good percentage of the U.S. agribusiness depends entirely on the migrant workers labor that comes from Mexico - that is the case for NY State. The course strives to generate a better understanding of the relation between the U.S. and Mexico, helping students to immerse knowledgeably in current discussions about immigration policy and economics.
