SOC 361 - Mass Media, Popular Culture & Technology This course peels back the layers of our daily media interactions to reveal insights into societal norms, power structures, and the individual’s place within it all. We’ll dive deep into the political narratives crafted by the media, understanding their influence on public opinion and the mechanisms of democracy. A significant emphasis is placed on the dynamics of surveillance and its role in modern society as both a tool for safety and a mechanism for control, questioning its impact on privacy and civil liberties. By critically examining racial and gender stereotypes, the phenomenon of “fake news,” and the pervasive nature of social media memes alongside traditional media forms like books, movies, and TV shows, students will engage with the sociological dimensions of media consumption. This course challenges participants to decode the intricate relationship between media representations and their reflections on norms, social structures, and the political landscape.
