SOC 320 - The Rich and the Poor: Social Class and Inequality Why are some people so much wealthier than others? IS hard work enough to “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” and live the American Dream? Is a college education the ticket to a good income? Does being wealthy make you happy? Is poverty inevitable? Why has the income gap between white and Black families not improved in the U.S. for fifty years? Why do women make less money than men? In this course, we will address these and other questions in pursuit of understanding economic inequality, with particular focus on the role that race, class, and gender play in economic life chances.
