SOC 314 - Love, Sex, Marriage & Families How much of who we fall in love with is really our own choice? Does capitalism shape what we consider romantic? Do 50% of all marriages really end in divorce? Do husbands do more or less housework than boyfriends? These are the types of questions addressed in class through a sociological analysis of love, sex, marriages, families and other intimate relationships. Emphasis is placed on the social structures and historic trends that shape the meaning and experiences of intimacy. Topics include historical variations in dating practices and family forms, cross cultural differences in intimate partner selection and the role of capitalism, dating apps, and economic forces on dating and family life. The course also examines the rise of hook up culture and the social acceptance of cohabitation and casual sex. Emphasis is placed on the role of race, class, and gender in shaping intimate relationships. Course Codes: BR. Prerequisite: any social science PEQ or permission of instructor.
