General Information

While the Admissions Committee gives primary consideration to academic achievement and potential for collegiate success, talent in art, drama, music or co-curricular activities enhances a student’s application. A personal interview, although not required, is encouraged. This allows the applicant to view the campus and facilities and meet with an admissions counselor. Applicants may seek admission in either the fall (August) or the spring (January) semester.

Nazareth College provides students with three options when applying for admission as a freshman: Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision. A binding commitment to Nazareth is required for students accepted under Early Decision. An application is available at www.naz.edu, or write to:

A recommended course of study for freshman admission would include four years of English, three years of social studies, mathematics, science (two of which should be laboratory sciences), and a foreign language.

Admission of International Students - General Information

Nazareth College welcomes students from other countries. It is necessary for international students to apply for admission at least four months in advance of the semester in which they plan to enroll.

International undergraduate students may submit their applications throughout the year, but the deadline is February 15 for fall admission.

No intensive English language instruction is offered at the college. Official bank proof of financial backing also must be supplied.

Admission with Advanced Standing

Students may accelerate their progress toward a degree through Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), other programs, and external course work.  See the Academic Policies and Procedures section of this catalog for detailed information.

Freshman Admission

To apply as a freshman, submit a completed undergraduate application, a non-refundable $40 fee, an official high school transcript, scores from the SAT or ACT are optional, required essays and at least one letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor or a teacher.

After acceptance by the college, a final transcript must be submitted at the completion of graduation requirements.

Admission of International Freshman Students

Graduates of U.S. high schools, accredited international high schools, and U.S. dependent’s high schools overseas must submit a Scholastic Aptitude Test score (SAT) with a minimal critical reading score of 500. SAT tests are administered by the College Entrance Examination Board, Box 592, Princeton, New Jersey 08540, USA. This test is given throughout the world in November, December, January, March, May and June. Results of the test must be forwarded directly to Nazareth College.

Completion of a comprehensive pattern of college preparatory study with grades of B or better in all subjects is required. High school grade point average and test scores are used together to determine eligibility.

Graduates of foreign high schools should possess a high school grade point average of B/3.0 or better (A=4). Official secondary school transcripts in English - including names of all courses taken, as well as grades obtained - must be submitted. Transcripts must also include an interpretation of the school’s grading scale. Interpretations should indicate what grade range is considered “Excellent”, “Above Average”, “Average”, “Below Average”, and “Failure”.

Applicants from foreign high schools and whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by the Educational Testing Service, Box 899, Princeton, New Jersey 08540, USA with a minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test, 213 on the computer based test and 79 on the internet based test.  This test is given throughout during the year. Results must be forwarded directly to Nazareth College. A score of 500 or higher on the Critical Reading Section of the SAT waives the TOEFL requirement.  Nazareth College’s institutional code is 2511.

Nazareth College also accepts the International English Language Testing System.  A score of 6.5 or better on the IELTS exam is required for admission.  IELTS is jointly managed by British Council, IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL exams through more than 500 locations in 120 countries.

Application Deadlines and Notification of Acceptance

Early decision applications are due by November 15. Notification begins December 15. A binding commitment is required for students accepted under Early Decision. Admitted students must submit a $300 non-refundable enrollment deposit, due by February 1. Early Action applications are due by December 15 and applicants will be notified beginning January 15. Regular Decision applications are due by February 15. Notification begins March 1. For students admitted Early Action and Regular Decision, a $300 enrollment deposit is due May 1 to reserve their space in the freshman class. It is refundable up to May 1.

After a candidate has submitted a deposit to the college, information on housing (for those interested in living on campus), information on course selection and registration, and a form for a medical examination will be sent. The medical form must be completed by the candidate’s physician and sent to the Office of Health Services before the student begins classes. Failure to submit the health form will result in de-registration of the student.

Transfer Admission

Nazareth College welcomes applications from students in good academic standing from fully accredited two-year and four-year colleges and universities. A cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher is preferred for consideration. Candidates for teacher certification must have a minimum grade point average of 2.7. Prospective Physical Therapy majors must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 to be considered for admission.

For Fall admission, applications are preferred by March 15. Applications for Spring admission should be submitted by November 15. An official transcript must be submitted from each college or university attended (even if no credit has been granted). In addition, transfer students with fewer than 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of college credit at the time of application must have copies of their high school transcripts forwarded to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Notification of acceptance for transfer students will be done on a rolling basis.

Transfer Admission for International Undergraduate Students from U.S. Educational Institutions

Successful transfer applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in all acceptable baccalaureate level course work.

Two copies of official transcripts are to be sent directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Credit for advanced standing may be granted by the Academic Advisement Center only for courses comparable to those offered at Nazareth College.

Official copies of diploma/graduation certificate with certified English translation are also required, if applicable.

Transfer Students from Foreign Educational Institutions

Successful transfer applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in all acceptable baccalaureate level course work.

Two copies of official transcripts with certified English translation are to be sent directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Official copies of transcripts with certified English translation are required to be sent to the World Education Services for evaluation. Transfer Credit

Transfer students who are admitted to Nazareth College and who have earned, or will have earned, a two-year degree (AA or AS) from a fully accredited college or university prior to registration at Nazareth College are ordinarily granted 60 credits and junior status. Depending on previous courses, however, and the major and degree program selected at Nazareth College, some students may need more than 60 additional credit hours to complete a bachelor’s degree program.

Transfer students transferring to the Nursing Department with an AAS degree in Nursing are ordinarily granted 60 credits and Junior status.

Other transfer students who do not possess the AA or AS degree and wish to transfer credits to Nazareth College from fully accredited* two year or four year colleges or universities, or other institutions of learning (foreign, trade, technical, music, art, fashion, and business) will have those credits awarded on a course by course basis.

* Fully accredited means that a college or university is accredited by both the appropriate State Department of Education and the appropriate regional accrediting association.

Special Admission Programs (HEOP/EXCEL)

Higher Education Opportunity Program
The Higher Education Opportunity Program is a state and college sponsored program that provides an opportunity for New York residents who lack the academic background for college admission but who have potential for academic success to attend the college. Applicants must present a high school or equivalency diploma and prove extreme financial need.

Excel Program  
The Excel Program is offered to facilitate access to and success at Nazareth College, for  eligible students. Students who are underrepresented in the college population are eligible to participate under similar criteria as HEOP students without the state residency requirements or family income. Students admitted to the Excel program will benefit from the student support services, including personal and academic counseling provided by the HEOP/Excel department and its staff.

Early Admission

High school juniors who wish to apply for admission at the end of grade 11 should follow the same procedures as for freshman admission. In addition, they must submit a statement of parental permission and a statement from the high school indicating that a high school diploma will be awarded to the applicant after completion of one or two semesters at the college. They must also complete an interview at the college with a member of the admissions staff. Students matriculated under early admission are not eligible to apply for financial aid until they complete their high school graduation requirements.

Readmission

Students who have interrupted their studies for a semester or more and wish to return must file an application for readmission. If the student has taken courses at another college or university since attending Nazareth College, an official transcript of the work completed should be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. No application fee is required. See the Academic Policies and Procedures section of this catalog for more information.

Deferred Admission Plan

Students who have been accepted for admission may delay entrance into Nazareth for a period of up to one year. Students wishing to defer admission should request this by writing to the Vice President for Enrollment Management.  Students who defer must submit an enrollment deposit to hold their place in the freshman class by May 1 of the year they wish to enroll.

ROTC

Through the Rochester Area Colleges consortium, Nazareth College students are eligible to participate in Army and Air Force scholarship programs. Both are located on the campus of the Rochester Institute of Technology.
