Mission

Nazareth fosters integrated learning through action and reflection, educating whole persons who are guided by empathy, committed to equity, and prepared to lead innovation for our time.

To carry out that mission, Nazareth University offers graduate programs that promote academic excellence in the preparation of professionals who are leaders in the local and global communities through educational and experiential opportunities, and individualized support.

Nazareth began its current graduate programs in 1971. Today, graduate students can choose from dozens of degree programs within the College of Liberal Arts, Sciences, Business, and Education, the College of Interprofessional Health and Human Services, and the College of Visual and Performing Arts and Design. Nazareth University’s experiential approach to learning and leading gives its students a balance of classroom knowledge and authentic application. Through field work, clinical experiences, student teaching, internships, service learning and alternative-break trips, students are encouraged to view their careers from multiple perspectives and apply their skills to making a difference in their community.

True to the vision of its founders, Nazareth University has remained a learning center committed to such academic, cultural and social justice experiences that enable its students to define their life’s work in a holistic way, and to accelerate their position in their chosen life’s work.

Curriculum

Nazareth University of Rochester is incorporated under the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and is an accredited member of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. It is approved by the New York State Education Department for the training of veterans and other eligible persons.

Nazareth University offers 25 graduate programs of study including: the graduate degrees of Master of Arts, Master of Music, Master of Science, Master of Science in Education, Master of Social Work, and Doctor of Physical Therapy. A combined Bachelor of Science-Master of Science in Education may also be awarded. In addition to master’s degree programs, the University offers a range of professional advancement certificate and specialization programs in each of the three colleges. The University holds membership in the American Council on Education and the Association of American Colleges and Universities. Program accreditation includes: Creative Arts Therapy (NYS Licensure Qualifying; Art Therapy program accredited by the American Art Therapy Association; Music Therapy program accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and approved by the American Music Therapy Association); Physical Therapy (Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education); Social Work (Council on Social Work Education); Speech Language Pathology (Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology). The teacher education programs in the School of Education are accredited by the Association for Advancing Quality in Education Preparation (AAQEP). In addition, the School of Business and Leadership is a member of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

The 2022-2023 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges guide ranked Nazareth in the top tier of colleges and universities for Best Regional Universities North. Rankings are based on academic quality indicators such as graduation rates and faculty resources. The region covers 11 states and the District of Columbia.

Nazareth is No. 103 among more than 600 Best Master’s Universities by the 2022 Washington Monthly College Guide and Rankings based on contributions to social mobility, research, and public service. Nazareth also made the list for the 2022 Best Bang for the Buck Rankings: Northeast - an exclusive list of schools ranked according to how well they help non-wealthy students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.

Nazareth is among a select group of top colleges and universities across the country hand-picked to earn a 2022-2023 Best Colleges of Distinction designation for its commitment to engaged, experiential education. Colleges of Distinction focuses on institutions like Nazareth that are committed to the undergraduate experience and deliver on four overarching distinctions - student engagement, teaching, community, and outcomes.

Nazareth regularly ranks among the country’s most prestigious colleges and universities for its number of Fulbright scholars, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Nazareth consistently ranks among the best for student civic engagement. Washington Monthly, NASPA (the leading national association of student affairs administrators in higher education), the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, and the Carnegie Foundation have recognized Nazareth’s sophisticated, successful approach to community engagement.
