English Major with Inclusive Education - Literature Track

Students in the Literature Program pursue courses
that provide both a broad foundation in the history of literature in English,
and in-depth study of particular periods, genres, and styles. Core courses in British and American
literature provide both knowledge of the literary tradition and skill in
literary and cultural analysis and criticism. And electives focusing on a wide range of literary topics enable
students to learn much more about the historical periods and cultural contexts
from which literature has come, and the ways in which it has influenced our
understanding of the world we live in.
Students who elect to pursue teacher certification
through our English Education Program also receive special instruction
in teaching methods and philosophy through the English Department (in addition
to their required coursework in the Education Department). In order to be eligible for the Professional
Semester (student teaching), students must maintain a grade point average above
2.7.

English Core
The English Core consists of the following nine credits:
Required Courses for English Major with Inclusive Education - Literature Track
In addition to the core courses listed above,
all Literature majors with Inclusive Education are required to take the
following courses. English Literature Elective Courses
In addition to the five required literature courses listed
above, English Literature majors select five upper-division (300-400 level)
electives, at least one of which must be in British literature and one of which
must be in American literature. Required Courses for Inclusive Education
The following courses are required for Quad
Inclusive Education certification. The Quad Inclusive program includes:
Childhood Education (Grades 1-6), Childhood with Disabilities (Grades 1-6),
Middle Childhood (Grades 5-9), and Middle Childhood with Disabilities (Grades
(5-9).
English Literature Senior Experience
The Senior Experience in
Literature is the culminating experience of our major, and is required for
graduation. It is intended to enable
students to demonstrate their mastery of their major field, and their ability
to make connections between study in the major and work in the liberal arts
core curriculum. Students begin the
process in the fall of their senior year, choosing a literary text or texts for
an oral presentation, and a collection of written work from courses in the
major and in the core curriculum for a portfolio, and then complete the process
in the spring by having a one-hour meeting with two faculty members—the Senior
