Social Science - Major

Required
Introductory courses in four of the following:
Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology; SSC
444; a specialization of 12 credits beyond the introductory course in
one of the Social Science disciplines; 9 credits upper-division, from
among the other four Social Science disciplines. A minimum of three
credits in each Social Science discipline, introductory or
upper-division is required. The Anthropology specialization requires
MTH 207, SOC 352, ANT 101, 102, 318 and two upper-division anthropology
electives. The Economics specialization requires MTH 207, ECO 101, 102,
333, 334; ECO 410 or SOC 352 and an upper-division economics elective.
The Political Science specialization requires MTH 207, PSC 201, PSC
352, and three upper-division political science electives. The
Psychology specialization requires PSY 101, 201, 202 and a course from
two of the three areas in Psychology. The Sociology specialization
requires MTH 207, SOC 101, SOC 352, two courses from these: SOC 204,
314, 320, 409 and 410; one upper-division sociology elective. The
senior experience consists of a senior seminar (SSC 444) which
integrates material from social science and other liberal arts core
areas (history, philosophy, religious studies, literature, natural
sciences, mathematics, fine arts), and a senior comprehensive (SSC
499).
The Social Science major may be combined with the Inclusive Education (Quadruple Certification
Grades 1-9) program.

Social Science Core
The Social Science Core consists of the following:
- Introductory courses in four of the following areas: Anthropology,
Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology
- A specialization of 12 credits beyond the introductory course in one of
the Social Science disciplines
- 9 credits upper-division, from among the
other four Social Science disciplines.
Introductory Courses
Social Science Majors select one introductory course from four of the following areas:
Social Science Specializations
Social Science Majors must complete a specialization of 12 credits
beyond the introductory course in one of the Social Science disciplines. In
addition, students select 9 credits of upper-division coursework from
among the other four Social Science disiplines and complete SSC 444 and SSC 499. A minimum of three
credits in each discipline, introductory or upper-division, is required.
Anthropology
The Anthropology Specialization requires:
- Two Upper Division Anthropology Electives Credits: 6
Economics
The Economics Specialization requires:
- One Upper Division Economics Elective Credits: 3
Political Science
The Political Science Specialization requires:
- Three Upper Division Political Science Elective Credits: 9
Psychology
The Psychology Specialization requires the following:
- One course from two of the three areas in Psychology (middle digit in course number represents the area)
- Area I: Psychological Processes
- Area II: Psychological Functioning
- Area III: Psychological Applications
As well as:
Sociology
The Sociology Specialization requires:
- One Upper Division Sociology Elective Credits: 3
And two of the following:
Social Science Senior Experience
The senior experience consists of a senior seminar (SSC 444) which
integrates material from social science and other liberal arts core
areas (history, philosophy, religious studies, literature, natural
sciences, mathematics, fine arts), and a senior comprehensive (SSC 499). Sample Program for Social Science Majors
Within the Social Science Major, students specialize in one of five
areas: Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, Psychology, and
Sociology. Thus there are five program variations within this major.
The sample program below is an example of what the program may look
like for a Social Science Major with a Sociology specialization.
