Music Theory - Major

The Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Theory allows the student the opportunity to explore
the various components of music and to understand their role in the
communication of the aesthetic principles
of music and the reflection of the culture in which they are produced. The
student will be required to be proficient in the elements of music, analysis
and the ability to communicate in written and oral forms. The
degree program provides skills that allow the student the opportunity to
matriculate to applicable graduate programs in theory and/or composition.

Music Core
All students in the Music Department must take:
- Minimum 9 credits in upper division Music Theory or History and Literature courses (300 or 400 level)
- Hour private lessons (MUP 1_) - 8 Semesters
- Choir, Band, or Orchestra (ENS 08_) - 8 Semesters (7 semesters for Music Education students)
- MUS 019 - Concert Attendance Credits: 0
- MUS 099 - Freshman Orientation Credits: 0 (6 noon sessions)

In addition to the Music Core listed above, students pursuing a Bachelor of Music
degree must take the following:
Required Courses for Music Theory Major
In addition to the Bachelor of Music Core, Music Theory
students are required to take the following courses:
- Foreign Language credits: 6
As well as: Elective Courses for Music Theory Major
From
the list below, students select five upper division music electives; three
should be history courses.
Performance electives may also be selected.
Performance Electives
- Choir,
band, orchestra, jazz band, jazz choir, opera workshop, chamber ensembles (ENS 0__)
- Secondary lessons (MUP 2_)
Music Senior Experience
The Music Senior Experience allows the student an opportunity to
integrate their academic and performance training in music with the
broad-based liberal arts curriculum of Nazareth College. It includes a
publicly performed senior recital/project and a written component that
reflects upon the integration of music and the liberal arts tradition.
