Students in the PIPCID program pursue a 7-course sequence that blends the best of the classical rhetorical tradition with contemporary writing challenges.  Grounded in both theory and praxis, courses focus on rhetoric, technical writing and graphics, scriptwriting and videography, as well as substantive study of comparative linguistics.  Through an off-campus internship and the capstone senior seminar–including extensive experience with various computer platforms and software–students discover how academic skills and professional ethics are essential in the work place, be it in advertising, public relations, editing, teaching, or law.  As well as standing as a concentration unto itself, the program can be complementary to any other major, since graduate schools and employers want people with honed communication skills.  Students applying to the program must have a 3.0 GPA.

English Core

The English Core consists of the following nine credits:

Required Courses for English Major - Professional Communication and Information Design Track

In addition to the English core courses listed above, all students in the Program in Professional Communication and Information Design are required to take the following courses.

Professional Communication and Information Design Electives

In addition to the courses listed above, PIPCID majors select three upper-division (300-400 level) literature electives, at least one of which must be in American literature.

Professional Communication and Information Design Senior Experience

The PIPCID Senior Experience allows students to design and present a project/portfolio of work that bridges the academic and professional worlds. Using professional writing and integrated graphics, or other appropriate technology, the student demonstrates a grasp of rhetorical principles—with special attention to Purpose and Audience—competence with various software, and production of the project/portfolio at a professional level. The student submits a proposal to the Director of Writing Programs in the fall semester of the senior year; in the spring the student creates a technology-supported oral presentation for a team of 2 PIPCID faculty and one outside professional conversant with the subject matter. Often the critique offered by the outside profession leads to a revision of the project/portfolio with a view to publishing the project; in some cases, this experience leads to an entry-level position in some area of professional writing.
