Communication Sciences and Disorders Major with Initial Teacher Certification

The Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders is a
pre-professional program in speech-language pathology and audiology. Students
who follow the major sequence and satisfy minimum course requirements and
competencies also meet the requirements established by the New York State
Department of Education for initial certification as a Teacher of Students with
Speech and Language Disabilities. The program is designed to prepare students for
graduate study in the area of Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, or Deaf
Education. Students are provided opportunities to apply their knowledge through
work in the campus Speech and Hearing Clinic, and through off-campus service
learning opportunities. Students pursuing initial teacher certification also
complete a student teaching experience.

Communication Sciences and Disorders Core
The following courses are required for all Communication Science and Disorders majors: NYS Teacher of Students with Speech-Lanugage Disabilities
Additional courses required for NYS Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities include the equivalent of at least two semesters college-level study of a language other than English. As well as: Initial Certification Requirements
To be eligible for initial certification as Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities, a minimum grade of C is required in the following courses: Communication Sciences and Disorders Senior Experience
As a part of the Senior Experience, students participate in three senior seminars. These promote the integration of liberal arts and the major by encouraging critical thinking, problem solving, reflection on professional experiences, and discussion of ethical and cultural issues. The seminars encourage in the participants an appreciation of the relationship of the major with disciplines such as history, philosophy, religious studies and the natural and social sciences.
