Mathematics Major with Inclusive Adolescence Education

The mathematics major with inclusive adolescence education program is for students preparing to teach mathematics at the middle or high school level. This program consists of 37 credits of mathematics, including History of Mathematics, Abstract Algebra or Real Analysis, and Foundations of Geometry. Students also take a methods course for teaching secondary mathematics, one semester of calculus-based physics, and one semester of mathematical programming. In addition, students take the appropriate education courses to prepare them for the classroom.

Students are officially accepted into the mathematics major after completion of MTH 220, Introduction to Mathematical Structures, with a grade of C or better. All mathematics majors must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, both in the major and overall, and a minimum GPA of 2.7 to continue on in education certification.

Core Curriculum Requirements


All Nazareth students complete Core Curriculum coursework as part of their degree requirements. The Core provides a foundation in the liberal arts and sciences while guiding students to pose and explore their own intellectual questions. Mathematics Core


The Mathematics core provides the foundation for all of our programs. Students take 6 courses (18 credits) listed below. The individual programs add mathematical depth and breadth. The Senior Comprehensive Problem Solving Seminar engages the student in integrating and applying a broad range of skills and concepts.

  • Note - students who are majoring in a Foreign Language with Inclusive Adolescence Education complete their study abroad semester in spring of the sophomore year.

Mathematics Senior Experience


The comprehensive experience evaluates student mastery in mathematical thinking.  Students are actively involved in investigating collections of non-routine problems from a variety of sources. Students will be required to demonstrate their understanding and application of fundamental concepts, processes, representations and communication of mathematics.

*Notes

  • NYS certification standards require that students complete 6 credits in each of the following subject areas, with a minimum grade of “C” or higher in each course: English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
  • Eligibility for student teaching requires that students have a minimum GPA of 2.7 or higher.
  • Bachelor of Arts programs require a minimum of 90 liberal arts credits.
