Theatre Arts - Major

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: ACADEMIC PROGRAMS A-Z

The objective of the department of theatre arts is to prepare students for further study of and work toward a career in theater. Students must study a variety of areas in theater, from technical and design courses to acting and directing. These courses offer a thorough grounding in the history of theater and the various philosophies behind theater works, as well as the ability to analyze plays for production. Students may specialize to a limited degree in these areas and concentrate in some areas to a limited extent (such as acting, technical theater, design, or history).

The theatre arts department gives a broad and thorough preparation in the most important areas of theater, while the College educates students in varieties of thinking and awareness of the world and its heritages.

The department expects its majors to be committed to all of their courses. It further expects a commitment to the theatre arts program and to the maintenance of a positive, cooperative attitude among students and their co-workers and teachers—particularly in production work.

Theatre Arts Senior Experience

The Senior Experience for Theatre majors consists of a required seminar (THA 452- Seminar in Theatre with a zero-credit internship).  In this course, the students reflect on their major experience, and they are given opportunities to integrate material from theatre and other core areas of the college experience.  A final project is required in some phase of production, design or theory.
