Social Science Major with Inclusive Childhood/Middle Childhood Education Major

The social science major integrates five academic disciplines: anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, and sociology. Students select one of these disciplines upon which to concentrate their studies. However, they have some exposure to all five disciplines before completing the major. Many students combine the social science major with the inclusive childhood/middle childhood education major and become teachers. Others go on to attend graduate school or pursue a variety of careers related to working with people.
Required
Introductory courses in four of the five Social Science disciplines: Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology; a specialization of 12 credits beyond the introductory course in one of the Social Science disciplines (see below for required courses for each specialization); 9 credits upper-division, from among the other four Social Science disciplines; SSC 444. A minimum of three credits in each Social Science discipline, introductory or upper-division is required. The senior experience consists of a senior seminar (SSC 444) which integrates material from social science and other liberal arts core areas (history, philosophy, religious studies, literature, natural sciences, mathematics, fine arts), and a senior comprehensive (SSC 499).
The Social Science major may be combined with the Inclusive Childhood/Middle Childhood Education major.

Anthropology Specialization
Major may be combined with the Inclusive Childhood/Middle Childhood Education Major .

Required Courses for Anthropology Specialization
The Anthropology Specialization requires:
- Two Upper Division Anthropology Electives Credits: 6
as well as: Social Science Electives - Anthropology Specialization
- Two Upper Division Social Science electives (Psychology, Sociology, Economics or Political Science) excluding Anthropology.
Economics Specialization
Major may be combined with the Inclusive Childhood/Middle Childhood Education Major.

The following courses are required for the Inclusive Childhood/Middle Childhood Education major. The major prepares students for the initial teacher certification requirements in four certification areas: Childhood Education (Grades 1-6), Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Childhood Level (Grades 1-6), Middle Childhood Education - Generalist or Content Specialist (Grades 5-9), and Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Middle Childhood Level (Grades 5-9).
*Students in the Inclusive Childhood/Middle Childhood major who are pursuing a B.A. degree must take all electives in liberal arts areas in order to earn the 90 liberal arts credits that are required for the degree. Social Science Senior Experience
