Nursing Major - LPN to B.S. Program

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: School of Health and Human Services

The LPN to B.S. program is designed to allow graduates of schools of practical nursing to expand their career opportunities. Graduates of the program prepare to become Professional Registered Nurses by earning a B.S. in nursing and qualifying to take, and passing, the NCLEX-RN exam. These credentials provide the education needed to delete(earn an RN license, and todelete) advance nursing expertise and employment opportunities.

Prior education and experience as an LPN are recognized by successful completion of National League for Nursing Challenge Exams in Fundamentals and Maternal-Child Nursing, which earns 12 college credits. The student’s personal program plan and the length of time needed to complete the LPN to B.S. program will depend on the number of college credits in liberal arts and sciences that are transferred to Nazareth College from a previous practical nursing education program and the additional college courses completed by the student. The entire program requires 120 college credits.

Admission Criteria
The student must be a graduate of a practical nurse program and either hold an LPN license and current registration to practice, or be awaiting NCLEX-PN test results within the next six months. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required for any college credits that the student hopes to transfer into Nazareth. After the student has been accepted into the B.S. program, a list of course requirements and a schedule for progression through the curriculum will be created for him or her.

Nazareth College has special programs leading to the B.S. in nursing for graduates from the Isabella Graham Hart and the Marion S. Whalen Schools of Practical Nursing. Nazareth College has transfer agreements with these programs. Graduates can receive transfer credits for college courses completed as part of their practical nursing program.

Applicants who have graduated from other schools of practical nursing are also welcomed. Applications will be reviewed for potential awarding of transfer credits. If you are a graduate of a practical nurse program that does not award college credit, you will need to provide evidence that you can achieve a minimum GPA of 2.75 for at least 30 undergraduate credits.

Nursing Core

Students in the Department of Nursing are required to complete the following core courses:

Nursing Senior Experience

The senior experience for both the pre-licensure students and the registered nursing majors consists of seminars, projects and a departmental comprehensive examination in which majors examine the impact of their baccalaureate education on themselves as liberally educated persons, as members of the nursing profession, and as members of a global society. The goals of the senior experience are twofold: 1) to develop critical thinking, problem-solving and interactive skills as liberally-educated professional nurses; and 2) to analyze the interconnections among health, nursing, the liberal arts and the humanities, especially from the core areas of the Natural Sciences, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Literature, History, Fine Arts, Mathematics and Social Sciences.
