Music History and Literature - Major (Bachelor of Music)

The Bachelor of Music degree in music history and literature provides the student with a foundation in the history, repertoire, scholarly literature, and methodology of Western music, as well as with an introduction to non-Western musical traditions. The curriculum is designed to develop an ability to think critically, reason clearly, and write about the discipline of music within the context of the liberal arts tradition. The degree program prepares the student for further study in music history or musicology at the graduate level. The Bachelor of Music degree in music history and literature requires a minimum of 128 credits.

Music Core


All students in the Department of Music must take:

  • Minimum 9 credits in upper division Music Theory or History and Literature courses (300 or 400 level)
  • Weekly, one hour private lessons (MUP 1_) - 8 Semesters
  • Music Performance majors take 2 - one hour private lessons (MUP 5_) - 8 semesters
  • Choir, Band, or Orchestra (ENS 08_) - 8 Semesters (7 semesters for Instrumental Music Education students)
  • MUS 019 - Concert Attendance Credits: 0 (Music Education - 7 semesters, Music Therapy, Music Performance, Music History and Music Theory - 8 semesters and Music Business - 6 semesters)
  • MUS 099 - Music Department Orientation Credits: 0

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree must take the following:

In addition to the Cores listed above, all Music History and Literature students are required to take the following courses:

  • Foreign Language credits (intermediate level or above): 6 credits

Student selected research topics in MUS 416, 485, and 486 constitute nine elective credits for Music History and Literature students. 

Music Senior Experience


The Music Senior Experience allows students an opportunity to integrate their academic and performance training in music with the broad-based liberal arts curriculum of Nazareth College. It includes a publicly performed senior recital/project and a written component that reflects upon the integration of music and the liberal arts tradition.
