Return to: ACADEMIC PROGRAMS A-Z
Studio art majors may choose a concentration in painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics, or metalsmithing. (See also: Graphics and Illustration major). After taking a variety of introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses in a particular area, students are expected to attain a thorough knowledge of the chosen medium and its aesthetic possibilities. Through individual and group critiques and mentorship from faculty members, students are guided through the process of becoming professional artists in terms of style, content, and aesthetic vision.
The full-time faculty, composed of studio artists, art historians, and art educators, is supplemented by a number of practicing professionals who are highly respected in their areas. The College has strong working relationships with many local museums, schools, and graphics firms, providing students with an active internship program.
Transfer students in studio art must complete a minimum of five studio art courses at Nazareth College.
Students must have an AP score of 5 to place out of any Art Foundation courses (Art 101, 102, 106, 107). The use of any art AP credit toward completion of the art major is discouraged. An AP score of 4 or 5 may be used as studio art elective credits.

more advanced coursework in Art.
Art Electives
Students must complete 9 additional studio courses (27 credits). Studio Art majors must complete a minimum of four studios in an area or their choice. Art Department Senior Experience
The senior capstone course in the Art Department
deals with a variety of issues involving philosophical, cultural, political and
aesthetic ideas about art, the function of art institutions and art media, and
the individual artist. In addition to
reflective weekly and term papers, students will give presentations on the
evolution of their work during their college careers.
