Literacy Education Programs
- Literacy Specialist (birth-grade 6)
- Literacy Specialist (grades 5-12)
The Literacy Education Programs prepare classroom teachers who are skilled in
learning theories and practices that address individual learning needs, and who
are able to affirm the value of the broadest range of a diverse classroom
population and each member of the classroom. The program faculty believes that
all teachers need to be teachers of literacy and that all students can learn the
requisite literacy skills to make them lifelong readers, writers, listeners,
speakers, visualizers, and dramatizers.
The program faculty subscribes to the notion that, as a result of completing
the program, all teachers will be knowledgeable with regard to strategies and
support services to improve the literacy instruction for diverse student
populations in urban, suburban, and rural classrooms.
The Literacy Education Programs prepare classroom teachers to thoughtfully and
effectively integrate learning theories, practices, and research to address all
learners’ literacy needs and interests in an inclusive and supportive manner.
Based on revised standards developed by the New York State Education
Department and the International Reading Association, the expectation is that
all teachers who complete a Literacy Education program will demonstrate by their
attitudes and practice, the following beliefs:
- All effective teachers are literacy learners and instructors.
- Teachers learn and apply appropriate literacy strategies to address the
needs of diverse student populations in urban, suburban, and rural classrooms
effectively.
- All children can learn the requisite literacy skills and strategies,
thereby, enabling them to be lifelong readers, writers, speakers, visualizers,
and dramatizers.
