Nursing: Gerontological Nurse Practitioner

The Gerontological Nurse Practitioner program, accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and registered with the New York State Education Department is a 42 credit hour program specifically focused on the care of the elderly. The purposes of the program are to prepare nurses for advanced practice who:
- demonstrate critical thinking, clinical decision making and communication skills, cultural competence, and use of technology in providing culturally congruent care to the elderly
- demonstrate the criteria necessary to fulfill the ANA standards for certification as a gerontological nurse practitioner
- provide culturally congruent nursing care to elderly individuals and their families in and across all environments
- design, manage, and coordinate the delivery of culturally congruent care to diverse elderly populations in a variety of health care systems and according to health care policy
- collaborate with health care colleagues to promote holistic health for elderly individuals, families, groups, communities, and institutions in diverse settings
- utilize nursing and related research in addressing the nursing needs of elderly individuals, their families, and the community
- formulate and communicate a humanistic philosophy and code of professional ethics which reflect the responsible, accountable practice of a gerontological nurse practitioner.

Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Program
Entry Requirements
- Completion of a baccalaureate nursing degree from an American Academy of Colleges of Nursing and/or a National League for Nursing accredited program.
- Presentation of official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended with B average in required undergraduate Nursing courses, and an overall GPA of 3.0.
- Evidence of successful completion of Introductory Statistics and Introductory Health Assessment (credit-bearing courses).
- Copy of current professional nursing license and registration in New York State or other jurisdiction.
- Minimum of one year’s experience working in nursing as a Registered Nurse.
- Two letters of recommendation.
- Application and fee.
- Completion of the personal-professional statement as described on the application form.
- Interview with the Director of the Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Program.
Application Deadlines
For Fall Term, Spring Term, or Summer Term: The application deadline is the first of every month, except in the months of January, August, and December when no admissions decisions are made. Program Requirements (39 credits)
Elective Courses: (3 credits)
Students may choose one elective course with approval of the Program Director. Advanced Certificate Program, GNP
Nurses who already have a master’s degree in nursing may enroll in the GNP program for an Advanced Certificate. This 33 credit hour program consists of the clinical specialization and practice core courses. Other courses may be required as applicable to the individual student’s needs and interests. Required Courses: (33 credits)
