TSL 609 - Principles and Practice of TESOL in Early Childhood

This course examines historical and theoretical perspectives on the field of TESOL, and describes contemporary models and approaches to the education of English Language Learners in early childhood and childhood. Principles of language development across the curriculum form the basis for a review of methods, materials, and technology appropriate to young English Language Learners of all backgrounds and proficiencies, developed in conjunction with fieldwork in local ESOL settings. Broad understanding of the role of the ESOL educator is developed with reference to professionalism and advocacy in TESOL, interaction with parents and community, and the impact of NYS Learning Standards and TESOL standards in framing the education of English Language Learners. This course serves as a complement to TSL610, which examines similar issues in Middle Childhood, Adolescent, and Adult TESOL. 25 hours fieldwork required for initial and changing certification levels.
