TSL 603 - Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition

This course examines the aspects of language most relevant to the teaching of English to speakers of other languages - phonetics and phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics - and offers multiple perspectives on the role of language in culture, identity, and in all learning. A review of theories of second language acquisition in comparison with and often building upon ELL students’ first languages leads to the articulation of principles for language teaching practice. Students will investigate a topic or contemporary issue within the field of applied linguistics through a field-based project which relates linguistic concepts to the teaching and learning of ESOL.
