CHM 245 - Inorganic Chemistry This course is designed to build a fundamental understanding of the behavior of chemical species traditionally not covered in organic chemistry. While this may seem like a rather vague description, the aim is to give the student the tools needed to approach the study of chemistry from a series of basic concepts which apply to all of the elements of the periodic table. We will begin by looking into the relationship between structure and spectroscopy and how a mathematical treatment of these will allow the student to both predict and interpret a variety of spectroscopic data. This will be followed with an in depth look at bonding theories and discussion of how most of the chemical reactions one is likely to encounter can be approached from one or more of these theories. Along with this discussion we will expand upon the simple concept of acid base chemistry and use this as a springboard to an investigation of reaction kinetics, mechanics, and equilibrium systems. The course will conclude with practical experience in putting all of these principles together in the study of coordination compounds. Course Codes: ABR.
