ENGL 350 - African American Geniuses This course will engage with works by African American authors who have won MacArthur Foundation “Genius” grants. Collectively, their writing interrogates issues such as the Black Lives Matter movement, the importance of community and family, women’s rights, race and law enforcement, racism and economic inequality, and racial justice. The courage, grace, and innumerable talents of African Americans are ever- present in their work as well. Selected writers may include Octavia Butler, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Kiese Laymon, Suzan Lori-Parks, Claudia Rankine, Jesmyn Ward, Colson Whitehead, John Edgar Wideman, and Jacqueline Woodson among others.
