ENGL.Q 150 - Space and Place

(Perspectives Enduring Questions) This course explores the theme of Space and Place through close reading and literary analysis of at least two forms, with attention to the multiple possibilities for and modes of interpretation. How do places acquire identities? How are people defined by place? How do literary works represent both? What role does literature play in transforming a physical space into a humanly significant place? Students will emerge from the course able to discuss enduring questions about Space and Place through exposure to and practice of the fundamental concepts and skills of literary analysis. The course is an invitation to students to college literary study, with an eye to cultivating a lifetime practice of literary understanding and appreciation.
