ENGL.Q 140 - Identities Short Story

(Perspectives Enduring Questions) This course explores the theme of Identities through close reading and literary analysis of at least two forms, with attention to the multiple possibilities for and modes of interpretation. How do literary works reflect and create the categories/definitions of various identities and why? How can they reinforce and/or upset existing identity structures(such as social class, race, or gender)? What are the effects of socially accepted norms/categories/definitions? Students will emerge from the course able to discuss enduring questions about Identities through exposure to and practice of the fundamental concepts and skills of literary analysis. The course is an invitation to students to college literary study, with an eye to cultivating a lifetime practice of literary understanding and appreciation.
