LST 519 - The Haunting of America

What and who is haunting America? If the stories we tell others also inform us about ourselves, what are we saying? How and to what extent do Americans use ghosts in their narratives? If the Gothic tradition stages a culture’s deepest fears, what are they? In this course, we’ll seek to answer these and related questions by reading, viewing and comparing works from a variety of perspectives, cultural traditions, and historical periods that employ haunting as a central motif.
