SPN 315 - Cronica Urbana Y Modernidad En America Latina This is an upper level course for Spanish majors and qualified minors. The course analyzes the leading role of urban chronicles (journalistic writings) in the partial success of the project of modernity and progress that lead to the creation of independent nations in the mid of the 19th Century. The role of urban chronicles has been central to the articulation of national identities in Latin America. The course explores the concepts of modernity and progress from a very different perspective 150the standpoint of societies in the margins of main economics trends, as the ones from Latin America where highly technologic industries coexist with pre-Columbian ways of life and highly educated and wealthy citizens coexist with indigent and poor human beings whose citizenship has not yet been acknowledge by the project of the modern state and society.
