LST 527 - South Asian Religious Art Provides a multi-disciplinary exploration of predominantly Buddhist and Hindu artistic forms and representations in the regional context of South Asia. As suggested in the course’s subtitle, the primary focus will be on Buddhist and Hindu artistic expressions, the mythology that surrounds these objects, and the ways in which these material expressions of South Asian religious culture are to be interpreted symbolically. Within a multi-disciplinary framework, students will gain an appreciation for the paintings, sculpture and architecture studied in their historical, social, religious and cultural contexts. Additionally, through several off-campus site visits, students will have the opportunity to experience these works in both the museum as well as in situ, i.e. as foci of ritual practice, worship, and devotion.
