PTR 509 - Professional Issues III

As the third in this series, this course will use the first two courses and the first clinical education experience as foundations. Students will begin to integrate their knowledge of patient care with the professional, ethical and legal issues that face practicing physical therapists in an array of delivery systems. They will be introduced to concepts of teaching and learning as they apply to clinical education, as well as to patients and other public groups. Students will gain experience in advocacy for their profession (APTA) as well as for their patients. Students will explore issues of cultural competence and the costs/benefits of pro bono service in the community. Students complete a substantive project related to ergonomics in a community setting as a practical experience in teaching and health/wellness promotion. In all cases, the relationships between payment systems and quality care delivery will be addressed.
