PTR 551 - Clinical Education Experience II This is
a supervised eight-week clinical
educational experience
provided in an approved
agency. Supervision is
provided by a licensed
physical therapist (clinical
instructor) who
helps the student bridge
academic knowledge to
actual patient care. The
student is expected to
have achieved basic skills,
observational skills
with anthropometrics, and is
conducting basic
assessments independently.
Following a formal
orientation to the facility,
the student is
expected to carry out more
difficult patient
treatments in accordance with
all didactic
instruction preceding this
clinical. Note writing
and goal setting are areas
that are emphasized
since the student must learn
to connect
observations and measurements
to reasonable and
functional patient goals. The
student should be an
active participant in
discharge planning.
Interpersonal skills continue
to be challenged by
requiring the student to teach
the patient or a
family member a specific
exercise or technique
that relates to a functional
skill. Students are
expected to carry their own
caseload and may
require assistance in managing
time. Treating more
than one patient is
characteristic of the senior
level student. Depending on
the agency, the
student may be introduced to
administrative duties
of census taking, scheduling
patients, and
supervising subordinates, and
taking an active
role in Total Quality
Management. The student must
conduct an in-service that is
arranged with the
clinical instructor. Journal
keeping is required.
