PTR 506 - Management of Patients With Cardiopulmonary Problems


This course addresses the physiology and pathophysiology of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory systems. Assessment and treatment of cardiac and pulmonary diseases and identification of the preferred practice patterns are stressed. The student must appreciate indications and contradictions for treatment in patients with significant compromise from diseases affecting these systems.  Topics include general postural assessment, chest assessment, respiratory function studies, breathing assessment and exercise, auscultation and interpretation of adventitious breath sounds, postural drainage, percussion and vibration, stress testing, EKG interpretation, determination of exercise tolerance, interpretation and implementation of the exercise prescription, and patient education regarding exercise and risk factors.  Consideration of the aging process and its effect on vital capacity will be explored.  Patient case studies will be utilized to elucidate obstructive and restrictive pulmonary diseases and their consequences in both children and adults.
