PTR 505 - Management of Children With Neuromuscular Problems


This course covers contemporary issues in motor control, motor development, motor learning across the life span. This course contrasts normal development to abnormal development including the emergence and apparent integration of primitive reflexes followed by the more mature reactions. Conditions that are covered include, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Down Syndrome, learning disabilities, sensory integrative dysfunction, oral-motor, and visual impairment. These conditions are discussed within the context of hospital, home, and center-based therapy for all age groups and in conjunction with current legislation governing treatment. Using current evaluative and treatment strategies, the student learns to design and implement appropriate patient treatment programs and to identify the preferred practice patterns. Case studies and videotaped patient interactions are included. In addition, students will have the opportunity to practice skills on each other and with actual patients.  Lecture 2 hours, laboratory 4 hours.
