PTR 504 - Rehabilitation of Patients With Functional Limitations

This course is designed in units covering the following patient conditions: spinal cord injury, amputations, burns, and cancer. Emphasis is placed on prevention of these conditions as well as assessment and treatment. In addition, specific conditions requiring orthotic intervention are reviewed and treatments are discussed. Orthotic and prosthetic checkout is emphasized. Discussion includes adaptation to a change in body image, re-entering society, and managing environmental barriers. Also emphasized is the use of compensatory strength and skills that may change the overall function of a muscle or place the patient at greater risk for secondary complications associated with aging. Critical thinking and problem solving are hallmarks of this course. Case studies, videotapes, and actual patient demonstrations are planned.
