PTR 503 - Neuromuscular Patient Management/Adult

This course begins with an overview of the neurological structures relevant to adult nervous system disease and subsequent dysfunction. Since stroke encompasses a large percentage of adult neuralgic dysfunction, it is given heavy emphasis. Additional conditions covered are head injury, multiple sclerosis, basal ganglia, and cerebellar dysfunction, and impairment caused by brain tumors. Students learn intensive handling techniques commonly used to assist patient recovery. Using a systems approach to problem solving, students will evaluate and treat patients who have varying clinical manifestations of the same disease or, with multiple diagnoses and identify the preferred practice patterns. Problems associated with loss of functional skills are discussed in terms of perceptual and emotional needs, orthotic, and nursing home placement. Family involvement and caregiver instructions are reviewed. Students will have the opportunity to practice skills on each other and with actual patients.  Lecture 2 hours, laboratory 4 hours.
