SWK 524 - Cultural Diversity and Social Work


This course explores strengths-based, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive perspectives as well as the concept of cultural humility. It focuses on the experiences, needs, resources and responses of people subjected to institutionalized and personally mediated forms of oppression because of their collective characteristics. Theory, knowledge, and skills are emphasized to guide empowering, culturally responsive strategies to address the needs of diverse groups. Cognitive and affective processes are stressed to help students explore intersectionality and assess feelings and attitudes about racism and oppression for enhanced awareness, understanding, and growth.
