HIS 357 - History of the Vikings

This course will cover the history of the Vikings from a global perspective. We will focus on the travel, contact, conquests, and connections that characterized these peoples and their diverse cultures. The Vikings have traditionally been displayed through the perspective of Western Europeans but this course will deemphasize that point of view to elevate and complicate the story, using texts, sources, and frameworks that prioritize the conflicts and connections that took place outside Western Europe and traditional viewpoints. We will also work to develop the skills and tools historians use in their own craft. Course work will include short papers that respond to our course materials and one longer final research paper that we work on throughout the semester. Course codes: BR. Prereq: PEQ in History.
